From left, Alyssa Skelton, Dani Schulman and Kelly Hallisey, all 15, paint a Gulf High restroom Monday. Three dozen students and teachers were on hand.
NEW PORT RICHEY — They stared at the restroom walls with a mixture of dismay and disgust.
Paint had chipped away in places. Pen marks ran along stretches. Spiderwebs dangled from the corners.
Armed with brushes, rollers and gallons of off-white paint, about three dozen Gulf High students and teachers spent Monday morning refurbishing the school's main hallway restrooms. The effort came as the first step in an initiative to spruce up the school's image, too.
"We're working to touch it up, starting with the paint," explained junior Casey Pereira.
Over time, Gulf High has come to suffer a poor reputation.
"Everyone thinks it's like ghetto," senior Liz Mathieson said.
Receiving a D grade from the state in 2007 didn't help matters, added sophomore class sponsor Kelly Davey: "It was like we were the red-headed stepchild of the county."
Things have started to turn around. Gulf earned a C from the state in 2008, missing a B by just four points. And it got a new principal, Steve Knobl, who made school pride a top priority.
Paintbrush-wielding students and teachers welcomed the mood shift.
"I think with Mr. Knobl here there are going to be a lot of changes, and it's going to be a real good year," junior Vanessa Bowers said. "It's time for a change."
Added junior class co-sponsor Angela Cotney, "More than any other year, I want to come back."
Cotney said she got the sense that kids will have a greater voice in the goings-on at Gulf High. As a result, Davey said, the students should have more opportunities to participate in events, giving them a greater sense of ownership and pride.
"The kids, I think, are dying for the opportunities," Davey said.
And the starting point came with a fresh coat of paint.
Heavy fumes permeated the school corridors early Monday as the team of student leaders — mostly student council and International Baccalaureate kids — rolled and brushed and spattered the restroom walls. Most wore old T-shirts and pants for the occasion, which quickly became speckled (or worse) with the paint.
Lacking ladders, they climbed countertops and commodes to reach the highest points. It wasn't easy work, and the students didn't have to be there. But they said they wouldn't have it any other way.
"It's something we can do for our school. They've done so much for us," said junior Rhea Forbes.
"I really do want to make the school better," added senior Matthew Ong. "It's a benefit for the whole community."
After finishing the student restrooms, the teams tackled the staff restrooms. Today they're coming back for campus litter patrol.
Joe Wolf, an active dad at the school, said he was impressed by the teens' hard work and desire to improve their school.
"They're accomplishing something," said Wolf, who took the day off from work to volunteer. "They're not in front of the TV. They're taking pride in what they're doing. … The fact that they're here and they don't have to be says it all."

I must say that we are full of comments, some positive and some negative. Its sad to see such criticism, we are all not perfect! We are all individuals and are equally made. Lets just welcome the changes, not degrade others.

This article should have included the fact that Steve Donaldson gave up his time for 4 hours helping out as well. When was the last time Heather Fiorentino got down & dirty to improve the schools? Make sure to vote for Steve Donaldson in November!

The New Principle and all the staff can help. But it's the kids and the parents that will make the difference. Kudos to who was there to help. And the rest of us will have plenty of chances to help throughout the year. Don't be shy.

Hey all you Imerson bashers let's not forget that while he was principal the school did jump from a D to almost a B school! He tried the best he knew how! Not everyone has the same leadership abilities! Glad to see Steve Knobl is being so dynamic!

I feel sorry for those of you who made negative comments, it must be depressing to have such a pessimistic view of life. Gulf's actual physical image needs a huge cleanup. That is just the first step in a continued effort to promote positive change!

Obviously those blaming the maintainance staff for being asleep was sleeping during english class; nor does he have any idea what obstacles maintainance has to face. Be part of the solution, not part of the problem. How ignorant a comment.

So Mr. Imerson is the new director of volunteers? Here's an idea, why doesn't the superintendent get a "volunteer" to be the director of volunteers? How existential!

Many of these students experienced Mr. Knobl as an assistant principal at Gulf Middle, so they know what kind of great leadership he will bring to GHS. He was a very respected assistant at GMS, by students and staff. He is a perfect fit at GHS.

Makes you wonder why a $96K+ former principal couldn't get this kind of effort. After all, HF tells us Imerson (our new Director of Vounteers) is a great communicator with strong ties to the community.

What a great way to create a ripple effect of school pride. Keep up with the good press St. Pete Times. I wish Gulf High all the best. It is exciting to be a part of a time of change. Great work to all involved!

It just shows you what a lousy job Imerson did, and yet he gets moved to higher places. How about making some of the schools dirtbags do painting as they are the ones trashing the campus.

Kudos to these kids. Lets hope the idiot who don't want this won't desecrate what these kids have done. Have pride in your school. If you don't want to be there don't destroy it, go somewhere else.

What a breath of fresh air after all the negative press coming out of Gulf High. Special kudos to the teachers who gave up a day of their summer vacation to paint student bathrooms! You are all appreciated by the community you serve!!

Yes, while change maybe just what GHS needs, can we really say that painting the bathrooms is going to start a revolution? But...it is a step in the right direction. Good Luck this year Gulf.
