Athenian Academy in New Port Richey has new principal

Athenian Academy names new principal

Maureen Moore, ousted as Pasco schools communication director this summer after just one year on the job, has found a new position in the county's education community. She took over Monday as the new principal of the Athenian Academy charter school.

"They just determined they needed new leadership here and they wanted to go in a new direction," Moore said. "We're hoping the combination of all my experiences will help me be very successful."

Moore was a teacher, principal and district-level administrator in North Carolina before moving to Pasco schools.

She comes to the A-rated Athenian Academy as it breaks its ties with longtime management firm the Leona Group, and seeks to improve its relations with the school district. Its contract renewal with the district is a critical first step.

Moore said she expected the contract, which is several weeks behind schedule, to come to the School Board in mid August.
