TAMPA — What, exactly, does good teaching look like?

The Hillsborough County school district is taking part in a national study to find out, with about $1.4 million in funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Using 700 to 1,000 teacher volunteers in the district and about 2,000 more from other districts, the foundation plans to videotape teachers in their classrooms. It also will test their subject-area knowledge, chart student growth, and give students in-depth tests that delve more deeply than the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.

The district also is expected to win a $100 million Gates grant to develop a cutting-edge merit pay and teacher evaluation system.
