Challenges make her stronger

BROOKSVILLE — Central High School graduating senior Syclair Jones, 18, is a top student with a 4.37 grade point average.

She attended the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants Minority Residency Summer Program at the University of South Florida in between her junior and senior years, and it helped direct her in her studies.

Jones, the daughter of Marcia and Clarence Jones of Weeki Wachee, is considered an exceptional student among this year's graduating class at Central High.

What are your favorite memories of high school?

"In my 10th grade year, I was in the marching band, and our halftime show was a Michael Jackson tribute.

"One of the songs we did was Beat It, and we had a dance to go with it. Doing the dance and seeing how the crowd reacted to our performance was very memorable."

Who was the best teacher you had in high school and what made her/him special?

"I cannot name one teacher, because there have been a lot of teachers who believed in me more than I believed in myself."

(Jones did name a freshman-year teacher, Andrew Smith, as very encouraging.)

Have you had to struggle in any way while you were in high school?

"People have these ideas about black people and how they act. (I've had) a lot of criticisms because 'I act white.' I've tried to move past it.

"Are (they) saying black people aren't supposed to respect authority or care about their academics?

"You'd think we've moved past this by now. But it's definitely made me stronger."

What are your plans for college and the future?

Jones said she will major in accounting and attend the University of Florida, where she will explore her interests, skills and talents — "so I can figure out what I enjoy doing."
