Check Web for Hillsborough back-to-school details

Back-to-school basics: Just about everything parents need to know before the school year starts is posted on the Hillsborough County schools Web site at sdhc.k12.fl.us. Follow the link for "Schools" to go to individual sites. To reach the district's switchboard, call (813) 272-4000.

First day of school: The first day of school for students is Aug. 25. Go to the school district Web site and click the "Calendars" link for a list of holidays and other days off.

Immunizations: All students must have a physical exam before school starts, as well as proof that immunizations are current. Required shots for all grades include MMR, DTP, polio and hepatitis B. Children entering kindergarten must have two chicken pox vaccinations. Click on the link for "School District Information," then follow the "Back to School" link for immunizations and physicals.

School start/end time: School start and dismissal times vary, and bus routes and boundaries change. Visit each school's Web site or call your school for details. For bus transportation information, follow the link to "Student Transportation Information," then click on "Bus Routes."

Dress code: Many elementary and middle schools ask that students wear uniforms, which usually consist of khaki or navy bottoms and a collared shirt or school T-shirt. Call or check individual school Web sites for details. For the districtwide dress code policy, go to the district Web site and click on the "Quick Links" arrow, then scroll down to "Student Handbook."

Meals: Breakfast is free. Lunch costs $2.25 for elementary students and $2.75 for high school and middle school. A la carte items are available at an additional cost. Go to the School District's Web site and click on the "Student Nutrition" tab for more information or to pay online.

Supplies: Supply lists vary. Many stores have official lists posted in their school-supplies section. Most schools also have a list on their Web sites. Teachers may request additional supplies when school starts.
