BRAVE NEW VOICES

Local students travel for poetry festival

Local students traveled to represent the Tampa Bay area at the 19th annual Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival in Washington, D.C. Participating students included Blake High School's Ashlyn Denson, Laura DeSousa and Sonia Hordge, Bloomingdale High School's Megan Kirkham, Durant High School's Jordan Theocharakis, Hillsborough High School's Denzel Pierre and King High School's Sarah Colarte. The poetry festival was founded in 1988 and includes workshops, panel discussions, community outreach activities, open mic sessions and a poetry slam competition.

ORANGE BLOSSOM GARDEN CLUB

Student awarded scholarship by group

The Orange Blossom Garden Club presented Lennard High School graduate Alexandra "Lexi" Garner with a $500 check as part of their annual scholarship program. Garner plans to attend Santa Fe College and complete her AA degree before transferring to the University of Florida, where she hopes to major in plant science, specializing in plant health with an emphasis on entomology and nematology. Her goal is to become a plant pathologist working with the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and eventually open an ornamental plant nursery. Garner will receive another $500 when she registers for her second semester.

PARENT UNIVERSITY

Sessions being held throughout the year

There will be multiple Parent University sessions held during the year, including one on Sept. 17 at Jefferson High School. The series of informational sessions covers academics for K-12 students, with breakout classes focused on academic and support programs in Hillsborough County Public Schools, effective strategies families can use to help all students succeed and ways to advocate for the resources necessary for our public schools. The event is free with all materials and lunch provided, as well as free childcare for children in grades K-5 with advance registration.

STUFF-A-TRUCK

Event collects school supplies

Elder Ford of Tampa is partnering with a local Chick-fil-A for the Stuff-A-Truck school supply drive. One of Elder Ford's trucks will be parked at the Bearss Avenue Chick-fil-A from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, where they will be collecting backpacks, glue sticks, notebooks, highlighters, index cards, children's books (ages K-12), tissue paper, hand sanitizer, shampoo, bar soap and kids' socks and underwear (ages K-3). All donations will go to the Hillsborough Education Foundation Teaching Tools Store, and those who donate will receive a coupon good for one free Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich or chicken biscuit.

VIGO-ALESSI

Company holds essay contest

Tampa-based company Vigo-Alessi held an essay contest where students tour its facilities and then write about the experience. The winner was Joshua Gerges of St. Cecelia Catholic School. The company provided him with $100 and his school with $500.

WOMEN OF AT&T

High school graduates win scholarships

Two Tampa high school graduates won scholarships from the Florida chapter of Women of AT&T, an employee resource group. Andrew Moss, a graduate of Robinson High School's International Baccalaureate program, is attending Wake Forest University and majoring in mathematical business. Steinbrenner High School graduate Kristen Barry plans to study at Florida State University's pre-law program.
