District to move school bus stop over safety issues

TAMPA — Just days after a group of parents expressed concern over a proposed bus stop at Cain Road and Gunn Highway, Hillsborough County School District officials have decided to move it.

John Franklin, the district's transportation general manager, said the unpaved path along Cain Road to Gunn Highway was deemed unsafe for students. There has to be 4 feet of walking surface on a side of road, he said.

"With the way that those culverts and ditches are sort of aligning down the side of the road, there isn't a clear path," Franklin said. "There is a certain standard that can't be met out there."

The bus stop will be moved into the Woodmont Community, very close to last year's stops. There will be two stops serving magnet, elementary, middle and high school students.

The bus will travel north on Cain Road, make a left on Piney Lane Drive and pick up students at that intersection. It will then loop around and make another stop at Piney Lane and Pine Bay drives, Franklin said.

"The community is very grateful for the school district's decision," said parent Barbara Boler.
