EXPLORER K-8: The Florida Department of Education recently announced winners of Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!, a statewide public service announcement contest, and Explorer K-8 in Spring Hill was on the list.

Language arts teacher Amy Ranger and eighth-grade social studies teacher Jason Yungmann did the filming at Explorer. Eighth-grader Nick Coniglio and kindergartener Arianna Durrum presented the announcement. They filmed at the Weeki Wachee Springs Coast Environmental Education Center

To compete in the contest, students created a short announcement geared toward this year's theme: "Take the Lead and Read." One winner was chosen at the elementary, middle and high school levels, with the winning schools awarded gift cards from Florida Education Foundation partners — $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place. The winning announcements will be featured on the Florida Education Channel and local television stations.

Explorer won second place at the middle school level.
