Furlough day will extend winter break for Pasco schools

LAND O'LAKES — Pasco County school students will have one extra day of winter vacation, thanks to the district's decision to furlough all employees on Dec. 22.

The School Board called for mandatory unpaid leaves of absence this year to cover about $6 million of a projected $60 million budget shortfall, with layoffs covering most of the rest. It reached an agreement with the United School Employees of Pasco to have one furlough on a class day, so the burden of budget cuts is not solely on employees' shoulders.

The board refused to lose more than one day of instruction, though. So the remainder of the furlough days will be spread out, with most to be served on the final work day of each employee's contract. That would be June 7 for teachers, June 6 for many instructional aides. The district has 22 work calendars, meaning the dates will vary.

Administrators will be furloughed Dec. 22 and June 7, as well as Jan. 6. School Board members will have their pay reduced by three days, but will not lose any board meeting days.

The board will act on the dates Tuesday.
