Help awaits within Hernando County School District's Student Services Department

The Student Services Department of the Hernando County School District offers several programs. For information, call (352) 797-7008.

Social workers: Social workers are available to elementary, middle and high school students and their families to help work through difficulties that might affect students' performance. Referrals are made by the school staff. Contact your school counselor if your child is having difficulty in school.

Student testing: Psychologists are available to perform academic and educational assessments. Referrals are initiated by the school staff, based on student performance.

Substance abuse education: Counselors are available to provide counseling and education at the request of a parent, student or staff member.

Guidance counseling: Guidance counselors are available at each school. Most elementary schools have two, and each middle and high school has one counselor for each grade.

Teen parenting program: Students who become pregnant can continue their education at Hernando or Nature Coast Technical high schools. On-site day care is available for students' children up to age 2.

Behavior analysis: Certified behavior analysts can develop programs to reduce behavior that is inappropriate for school. The programs are tailored to each student's individual needs. Referrals are made by school staff.

Parenting programs: A variety of parenting programs will be offered on such topics as effective parenting and improving listening skills. Call Student Services for details on times and locations.

Tobacco-cessation and anger-management programs: Call Janice Smith or Anna Welshoff at Student Services, (352) 797-7008, for information.
