Hernando back-to-school briefs

Operation Backpack Brooksville: The Friends of the Children Inc. will host the annual Operation Backpack at 10 a.m. Aug. 9 at the Jerome Brown Community Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place, Brooksville.

The free event will include bounce houses, slides, hot dogs and various activities. Also, while supplies last, free backpacks with school supplies will be provided to students entering kindergarten through the eighth grades; one backpack per child, and an adult must be present.

Operation Backpack Spring Hill: The Spring Hill Kiwanis Foundation is helping to sponsor an Operation Backpack event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 9 at Challenger K-8 School of Science and Mathematics, 13400 Elgin Blvd., Spring Hill.

This is a free backpack/school supplies giveaway that involves many organizations, including local Kiwanis and Rotary clubs, the Hernando County Education Foundation and others.

Donations of school supplies are appreciated and may be dropped off at several locations: Locomo Skate-Dance-Party, Springleton Fun Park or Gino's Place-Hot Dogs, Paninis and More.

Back-to-school festival: A free "Getting Back into the School Groove Festival" will be from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 9 at First United Methodist Church, 9344 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill.

The event will include bouncy rides, face painting, refreshments, complimentary haircuts for school-age children, eye exams and games.

While supplies last, children will receive one free backpack filled with school supplies; children must be accompanied by an adult. New socks and underwear will also be available.

The event is sponsored by various couples and family ministries of First United Methodist Church, Devereux Kids and other community partners. For information, call the church at (352) 683-2600.
