EXPLORER K-8: Students in kindergarten through second grade were invited to the school library May 4, dressed in pajamas and cuddling their favorite stuffed animals, to hear stories from administrator John Stratton and other school celebrities. Local business partners helped treat students to goody bags and rewards for their literacy efforts. The business partners were DiAna's Dance Express, Papa John's Pizza, Karen's Dance Supply, CiCi's Pizza, HEART Literacy, Friends of the Library and Sweetbay Supermarket.

FLORIDA FFA: The Florida FFA Association recently selected 23 student members as finalists in the Stars of Florida award recognition program. The program symbolizes the highest competitive recognition for FFA members and their Supervised Agricultural Experience programs in six different categories.

More than 200 applicants were considered. Each candidate will be interviewed by a team of FFA, industry and agriculture education representatives to determine the star in each area. Each finalist, their family and agriculture instructors will be recognized June 28 at the 84th Florida FFA Convention in Orlando.

The Brooksville FFA Chapter finalists in the Star in Agriscience category are: Allison Coelho, Marissa Mancillas, Shayanne Mumma and Melissa Ritter. All are Hernando High School students.

ACADEMIC AWARDS: These top graduating high school seniors were honored April 26 at the Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce's annual student recognition program at the Palace Grand in Spring Hill:

CENTRAL HIGH: Ana Bui, Avery Johnson, Brittany Wert, Danielle Joyce, Joshua Whitelaw and Lazarus DeLaRosa.

HERNANDO CHRISTIAN ACADEMY: Heather Drummond and Kaitlyn Lowe.

HERNANDO HIGH: Aniqa Hatem, Anna Clark, Chris Merced, Daniel Covillon, Kristen Jones, Marissa Mancillas, Robert Bryant, Terrance Owens, Victoria Seifried and Zachary Pritz.

NATURE COAST TECHNICAL HIGH: Alex Davis, Alexis Beetz, Allison Twyman, Erica Hampson, Hanna Smith, John Stratton, Keith Voyles, Theresa Thomson, Thomas DeCotis and Zachery Ekstrom.

SPRING HILL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY: Angela Fiscina and Peter Lopez.

SPRINGSTEAD HIGH: Emily Gustafson, Jacob Gibson, Khalid Shakfeh, Nathalia Botero, Nicole Alborella, Reema Pankaj Patel, Steven Baker, Syed Hamad Sagheer, Travis Kujawski and Victoria Selby.
