BROOKSVILLE — After participating in four drill meets that resulted in an invitation to compete in the state Air Force Association Air Force Junior ROTC Drill Competition on March 2, Hernando High School returned home with the top honor: the Bob Johnston Memorial Trophy.

The drill team competed in inspection, which included some questions about military knowledge, regulation drill marches and exhibition drill marches. The color guard competed similarly in inspection and knowledge, along with two routines, one based on the Air Force drill manual and the other based on the Army drill manual.

The color guard took first place in two judged events and third in the other. Color Guard commander Brooke Murray earned the second-place Commander's Trophy.

The drill team placed fourth in inspection and sixth overall, which, combined with the honors won by the color guard, was enough for the Hernando High unit to win Best of Meet.

Drill team member Matt Bendl won third place for his individual drill competition performance.

The color guard members are freshmen Ashley Thalman, Miranda Jones, Samantha Larkins and Thomas Coley; junior Jordan Watson; and senior Brooke Murray.

The drill team members are freshmen Bryan List, Chandler Graham and Elizabeth Stapleton; sophomores Johnny Ball, Joseph Ramirez and Matt Bendl; juniors Raymond Linville, Cheyenne Duket, Brenna Dougherty, Victoria Pedemonti and Ambriel Ploettner; and seniors Dravyn Shiley, Corey Adkison and Madison Toney.

The drill team commanders, senior Brittney Brandenstein and junior Steve Eirman, were awarded the fourth-place Commander's Trophy.

Col. James Crigger is the Hernando High senior aerospace science instructor, and Master Sgt. Hugh Flournoy is an aerospace science instructor.
