Hernando School District advertises open CFO position

BROOKSVILLE — The Hernando County School District has begun the process of replacing chief financial officer Desiree Henegar after she resigned last week amidst a scandal over her sex blog.

The district began advertising the position Monday. The application deadline is Jan. 23, according to the district's website.

Superintendent Bryan Blavatt said he is looking to fill the position as soon as possible.

"I'm confident that we'll be able to find someone fairly quickly," he said.

Blavatt acknowledged that the district's top financial post is taxing and comes with nuances not seen by financial officers who do not work in a school system.

If the district isn't able to fill the position quickly, he said, an interim chief financial officer could be appointed.

In the meantime, he said, the district has strong people already working in the finance office who can address any issues that crop up.

Henegar made $78,800 a year before she resigned.

News of Henegar's activities broke Jan. 2 when the Tampa Bay Times published a story about her posts to Tumblr under the pseudonym Floridagirl46.

Over a period of several months, Henegar, 47, sent numerous sexually explicit posts from board meetings, workshops and during work hours. In addition to pornography, some of the posts heaped scorn on Blavatt and other colleagues.

Henegar admitted the blog was hers when asked by the Times. She promptly removed it and resigned the following day.

The chief financial officer position requires a master's degree in accounting, a related business field or a valid Florida certified public accountant license.

An eligible candidate must have had a previous leadership role and excellent communication and management skills.

The person also must have knowledge of all federal requirements relating to public employer financial and accounting practices and knowledge of Florida statutes and administrative codes related to finance, employment and insurance, as well as School Board policies.

A desirable candidate would also have district-level experience with Florida school finances, according to the advertisement.
