Hillsborough schools break world record

TAMPA — The Hillsborough County School District has broken a world record for the largest-ever string instrument ensemble performance.

More than 800 musicians — 858 to be exact — performed Pachelbel's Canon in D on violin, viola, cello and base at Williams Middle Magnet School on May 11.

They were hoping to get Guinness World Records, and district officials say they received confirmation of their acceptance Wednesday. School officials served as witnesses.

The previous record was set in 2010 in Kirkland, Wash., with 392 string players at Juanita High School.
