How would you improve your school or education in general? Focus on keeping students in school and providing more opportunities to students for higher education through scholarships — more help with the application process, etc.

How has the state of the economy impacted your education and perhaps your choices about your future? It has affected me mostly by cutting many extracurricular programs, which in turn, makes it harder to get into college. It's also becoming increasingly more difficult to pay for college.

Sage advice for the up and coming? Stay focused. It's easy to lose sight of your goals, but you must stay on track to ensure your own happiness in the future.

One thing you wish you did in high school but didn't: I don't regret a thing.

Salutatorian: R. Presten Schram

Future school: The University of Florida, because it is the most prestigious school in Florida.

Ideal career: Orthopedic surgeon

Best or most influential teacher: Coach Tim White; registered nurse Cynthia Cole

Best advice or favorite quote: Do you want to be a doctor or a ditch digger?" Robert J. Schram.

Hardships overcome: Being overlooked for my academic accomplishments.

Favorite book: The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien

Clubs/extracurricular activities: National Honor Society, Class Council, President's List at Pasco-Hernando Community College, Phi Theta Kappa, varsity football, wrestling and weight-lifting. Employed at Paradise Fiberglass Pools Inc.

How would you improve your school or education in general? Have the administrators get involved with each and every student.

How has the state of the economy impacted your education and perhaps your choices about your future? With budget cuts you have to work harder to receive financial help to attend college.

Sage advice for the up and coming? Try to achieve all you can though high school, and don't let the years slip by you.

One thing you wish you did in high school but didn't: Said "thank you" more often to my Mom for all of her dedication and support in my academics.

The pink and purple phlox are popping up along Pasco's highways and byways. All is in bloom, it seems, and so now is the time to trot out the 2011 high school valedictorians and salutatorians. For the next few weeks we'll feature these nose-to-the-grindstone kinds of kids. Advanced placement, dual enrollment, all A's all the time — and then some — is the common theme. • They've got all sorts of dreams to better themselves, to one day enter the work force as doctors and nurses, engineers and CEOs and yes, even teachers. For now there are AP exams, senior projects, grad bash and prom to think about, along with that speech at graduation. But for a moment, let's celebrate and recognize those who have worked so hard to secure a spot at the top of their class.
