LAND O'LAKES — When the Pasco County School Board considers employee reappointments Tuesday, the list will include one name that has generated controversy in the past few months. Superintendent Heather Fiorentino has recommended keeping Deanna DeCubellis, whom she removed as Cypress Elementary principal in April, on staff as a grant resource specialist.
The decision has prompted some board members to ask questions about the propriety of keeping an employee who earned $77,444 a year (it's not known if she got a pay cut with her demotion) while laying off other employees who earn less and did not have poor evaluations.
Board chairwoman Joanne Hurley said Fiorentino explained that while DeCubellis did not perform up to expectations as a principal, she can perform well in another role.
"The onus is now on that person to perform well in that spot," Hurley said. "So many quality people were laid off. It's imperative we keep all the quality people that we can."
