Kindergarteners, newcomers must register for school

Now that students attending Pinellas County schools have received their assignments for the 2008-09 academic year, the district is urging parents of incoming kindergarteners to visit a nearby elementary school to get their "close-to-home" assignment by June 3.

Additionally, parents of students new to the public school system who are entering grades 6 and 9 should visit a nearby middle or high school to get their "close-to-home" assignment.

The steps are the same for all children in those categories:

• Bring a state-issued photo ID to the nearest school to get a user ID and password.

• Use the Student Reservation System computer at the school or go to www.pcsb.org on a home computer to reserve a seat at a "close-to-home" school.

• Visit the child's assigned school to deliver the required documents: birth certificate or other proof of identity/age, proof of residency, child's Social Security number if available, Florida Certificate of Immunization and a physical examination certificate issued within the last 12 months.

For more information, call the student assignment office, (727) 588-6210, or the district call center, (727) 587-2020.
