Learning Tree in Ridge Manor teaches recycling with TerraCycling program

Learning Tree students are learning at a young age about recycling by depositing drink containers in a decorated can. Part of the TerraCycling Brigade recycling program, the deposits provide rewards.

The packages are bundled into bags, and when 2,000 containers have been collected, they are sent to the company, and the school receives 2 cents for each, or $40.

The preschool also has school-age children there during non-school hours. "Our school-agers are even getting into it, saving pouches from lunch," said Gloria Harris, who owns and directs the school along with her husband, Shane.

The preschool also recycles Lunchables packages and empty ink cartridges. The cartridges earn the school points, which will go toward a die-cut machine.

With students and their families participating, the school invites the community to help, too. "We'd love it," Gloria Harris said.
