Nature Coast Technical High grad, class of 2013, is a leader

BROOKSVILLE — Victor Davila is a leader. And he's not afraid to admit it.

Whether it's on the basketball court or walking the halls of Nature Coast Technical High School, Davila said he's always trying to be there for others, lending a helpful hand or listening to those in need.

"I don't really like following people," said Davila, 18. "I like starting my own trends. I like leading."

Davila, the starting point guard on this year's Nature Coast basketball team, was recognized in April for his leadership at the school during the 39th annual Hernando County Student Recognition Banquet.

What are your favorite memories of high school?

"Basketball, definitely. This year, I remember the district championship game.

"We were down by 2 points with 16 seconds. I shot 3 and made it. It was one of the best feelings I've ever gotten. Biggest shot I ever hit in my life. That was definitely one of the things I will never forget in my entire life."

Who was the best teacher you had and what made her/him special?

Mrs. Shone Jung, a science teacher at Challenger K-8 School of Science and Mathematics, Davila said.

"She was the best teacher I ever had. At first, we didn't click at all.

"I got in trouble the first day of school because I didn't have my agenda open on the right date. I went back and I apologized, and ever since then she's been pretty much my mom as a teacher.

"We still keep in touch sometimes. I go over there and visit her."

What will be hardest thing to leave behind?

"The mind-set of a high school student. When you're in high school, you have enough freedom to where you think you're ready for the real world . . . but at the same time you're still living at home and your mom is still cooking you meals and you still go to school and people still watch you.

But once you get to college, you are in the real world. You have to go out there and cook your own meals.

Teachers really aren't going to tell you you have homework due this day."

What are your plans for college and the future?

"I want to be a lawyer," he said. Davila plans to study criminology at Florida State University.
