No air conditioning at two Hernando schools leaves classes sweltering

WEEKI WACHEE — A blown gasket in the shared air-conditioning unit at Winding Waters K-8 School and Weeki Wachee High School has forced the cancellation or moving of year-end activities, said Winding Waters principal Dave Dannemiller.

The problem is with a unit nearly the size of a truck trailer that dissipates heat, said Sean Arnold, director of facilities, maintenance and security for the Hernando County School District. The unit went down on Monday, and the repair will not be complete until Friday because it requires dismantling part of the unit and ordering a special part, he said. The last day of school is today.

Temperatures in some classrooms topped out at more than 90 degrees Monday, Dannemiller said, and he gave students the option of taking days off as excused absences. Most middle school students attended class, he said, because they had to take final exams; those who did not attend will make up the tests during the summer.

The eighth-grade graduation was moved from Weeki Wachee's gym to Central High School, he said, and an awards banquet was canceled.
