LAND O'LAKES — Less than a week after hundreds of school bus drivers filed a grievance over the new policy, the Pasco school district said it will drop its ban on beverages behind the wheel.
The district has long prohibited bus drivers from drinking or eating while the bus is in motion. But the rule was expanded this school year to require bus drivers to lock down the bus in a safe location and leave the operator's compartment in order to have something to drink.
Bus drivers said they spend hours in hot buses and should be able to sip water when stopped at a red light.
District spokeswoman Summer Romagnoli released a statement Tuesday evening saying the new language would be removed.
"We believe the previous language ensures the continued safety of students and employees," she wrote. "We appreciate our employees bringing this matter to our attention and value our employees' service to the students of Pasco County."
