TAMPA — Police locked down Van Buren Middle School after catching wind of several rumors alleging students had brought weapons to school Friday.
A morning investigation revealed a student had brought a BB gun to school, said Hillsborough County schools spokesman Steve Hegarty.
"We still take that very seriously," Hegarty said.
The student, who was not identified due to his age, will face discipline from the school, Hegarty said. It was not immediately clear if he would face charges.
Just as officials were about to release the school from lockdown, another rumor spread that a weapon was still in the building.
The investigation was still under way Friday afternoon.
"We want to hear about these things," Hegarty said.
