School Board approves budget, tax rate for 2017-18

Times staff

The Hernando County School Board on Tuesday gave final approval to a $285.9 million budget for 2017-18.

The board also approved a property tax rate of 6.619 mills, less than last year's 6.869 mills.

The general fund, which fuels daily operations and is fed by state and local tax dollars, totals nearly $189 million. The district will pay more than $17 million in debt service and use almost $50 million for capital projects, including school improvements and the purchase of equipment. Special revenue funds are budgeted at about $12 million, but are expected to grow as the district receives more grants.

In a presentation to the board, budget director Kendra Sittig reminded members that some budget numbers could change due to possible state assistance in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.
