Eckerd College group heads for Cuba on study trip
A contingent from Eckerd College leaves Saturday for Cuba, where 18 students led by Eckerd economics professor Peter Hammerschmidt will focus on the history and development of that country's economic system. Eckerd also is developing a relationship with the University of Havana that will allow marine science faculty and students to study Cuba's marine environment starting this summer. The group will be blogging about its activities at eckerdwt15cuba.tumblr.com, and will return Jan. 24.
Barrett Family Foundation gives $10,000 each to three teachers
The Barrett Family Foundation of Clearwater recently awarded three area teachers $10,000 each as part of its program to recognize math and science teachers at private schools in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. The honorees were Thomas Ma, math department chair at Admiral Farragut Academy; Leann Williams, who teaches calculus, physics and pre-calculus at Cambridge Christian School; and Eugene Jalbert, a calculus teacher at Tampa Preparatory School. The foundation, a non-profit organization, was founded in 2013 and plans to double the number of teachers honored for its 2015 awards later this year.
Clearwater High forum will tackle legal issues concerning students
The Clearwater High PTSA is sponsoring a forum entitled, "Your Student and the Law," open to all students and parents in Pinellas County. Three attorneys from the Tragos & Sartes law firm will discuss the liability and legal responsibilities involved in house parties, crimes, traffic violations, delinquency, military service and other situations. The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the auditorium at Clearwater High, 540 S Hercules Avenue.
YA author group to appear at Seminole High for discussion
A group of authors known as "YA Chicks Kickin' It" will take their writing and reading tour to Seminole High on Tuesday. The authors are Amy Parker, Christina Farley and Vivi Barnes, who visit middle schools, high schools, colleges, libraries and bookstores to talk to students about young adult literature. Their sessions include activities and discussions about characterization, plot structure, revisions and other writing skills, with the goal of getting kids excited about writing. Tuesday's session is open to students and teachers from Seminole High and surrounding schools. It will be from 5-7 p.m. The school is at 8401 131st St. N in Seminole.

All lunches include milk and seasonal fruits.
Monday: Teriyaki chicken with rice and roll, Giorgio cheesy bread with marinara, chef salad, stir fry vegetables, tossed or romaine salad.
Tuesday: Cheesy bean empanada, rib-b-que sandwich, chicken Caesar salad, Italian twist combo, baked beans, veggie dippers.
Wednesday: Chicken nuggets with dip, spaghetti and meatballs, yogurt parfait, ham and cheese croissant, sweet potato waffle fries, romaine salad.
Thursday: Breakfast for lunch, calzonette with marinara, farmer's salad, turkey and cheese sandwich, deli roasted potatoes, veggie dippers.
Friday: Pizza variety, cheeseburger sliders, tuna chef salad, school favorite sandwich, spinach or collard greens, mixed or romaine salad.
