SPRING HILL — To look at them, Joseph Cady and Thomas Glunt are about as different as two high schoolers can be.
Cady, bespectacled and precise, contemplates a business career. Glunt sports a beard and Hawaiian shirt, and hopes one day to design the computer games he loves.
But when the two Springstead High seniors march across the stage tonight for their diplomas, they'll share one considerable accomplishment: perfect attendance.
Over four years, while rain or sniffles laid their peers low, they got themselves to school. No senior slump for them. Even senior skip day didn't tempt them.
"Some people said, 'Why are you here still?' " said Glunt, who plans to attend Florida Gulf Coast University. "I considered it like a job. It's just something you're supposed to do."
"I just basically kept on going," said Cady, on his way to Saint Leo University.
And it didn't just start in high school. Glunt has been showing up without fail since sixth grade, and Cady's streak extends unbroken back to third.
Not surprising, both have been regulars on the honor roll and have earned their share of outside recognition. Cady made the National Honor Roll, and Glunt was tapped for the National Society of High School Scholars.
How did they acquire such persistence?
"Not from my husband and me," marveled Cady's mother, Sheila. "We always found a way to get out of it.
"I have all of his attendance books and everything," she added. "Even senior skip day he went. He said, 'It's only a few hours, what's the big deal?' ''
He'll learn. In a world of quick rewards and short attention spans, loyalty to the daily grind means something.
At a recent awards ceremony, there were plenty of warm words and applause for the high achievers. But when it came time to recognize perfect attendance, the audience responded with its highest award: a standing ovation.
