Football team earns acclaim

The school's football team earned first place in the St. Joseph's Children's Hospital 16th annual Kids Are Heroes campaign in the 13-to-18 age category. Team members were honored for supporting their principal's son, Nick LaBarbara, who is undergoing cancer treatment. More than 60 varsity and junior varsity players shaved their heads in support of the teenager, who is battling cancer for the third time. The students also created T-shirts and wristbands, hosted fundraisers and started a trust fund to help with the family's medical bills. Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos helped St. Joseph's congratulate the winners in three age categories at a recent ceremony. The winning students received trophies and other gifts.
