Young immigrant graduates from Springstead High as a leader

SPRING HILL — Springstead High School senior Bernard Ndedi came to the United States from Cameroon in 2005 filled with grand expectations.

He imagined that everyone was famous. And that there were no rules.

He found his new home — Hernando County — to be a bit different.

"It wasn't streets paved of gold like everyone was saying," he said.

But he's made the most out of his time here.

A track and field athlete, Ndedi, 16, has been recognized for his leadership at Springstead and was honored at the 39th annual Hernando County Student Recognition Banquet in April.

He has been a volunteer at Oak Hill Hospital and in student-led recycling efforts at the school.

What are your favorite memories of high school?

All things track. Last year, as a member of Springstead's 4-by-400 relay team, Ndedi helped break a school record.

"That was a good moment," he said.

Who was the best high school teacher you had and what made her/him special?

English literature teacher Kathleen Long. Ndedi said he liked her teaching style and the way she carried the class.

"I just like her class," he said. "I looked forward to it every day."

Will you miss Springstead?

"For the most part, I'm pretty ready to leave. But I will miss the teachers, of course. And some students. I will miss that. (Springstead principal Susan) Duval, she's a great person."

What are your plans for college and the future?

Ndedi will attend the University of South Florida to study medicine.

"I've always been interested in anatomy and the human body," he said. "I've always been fascinated by that."

Springstead High School graduation is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, at the school
