Pinellas school officials on Friday released a map showing the "close-to-home" zones for elementary schools throughout the county. The map is a primary feature of the new student assignment system, which replaces the choice plan.
The new zones will go into effect immediately as the district continues to place students for the 2008-09 school year, which begins Aug. 19. Zones for middle and high schools were released earlier this week.
Because the map lacks detail on streets and roads, many families will not be able to tell where their zone is. Those families should call the district's student assignment office at (727) 588-6210 or the call center at (727) 587-2020. Employees at both numbers will be able to provide the name of your new close-to-home school if you give them your address.
Students already in the system are automatically assigned to their current school. Families who do not like their current school or their new assignment can try to change it during a new "open enrollment period." The period is scheduled for Aug. 4-15, but district officials are considering an earlier time, perhaps in June.
Students new to the district can get a 2008-09 school assignment starting April 21. Parents can register at any Pinellas elementary school, where they will be given a user ID and password to access the student reservation system online. Computers are available onsite if needed.
