BRANDON — A smoke bomb set off Tuesday afternoon briefly interrupted classes for some students at McLane Middle School, sending two students to the hospital.
The smoke bomb went off in a hallway of the school at 306 N Knights Ave. about 1:30 p.m., said Hillsborough County school district spokesman Stephen Hegarty, and sixth-graders in that hall were sent to a nearby gymnasium for about 30 minutes.
Two students were taken to a local hospital as a precaution and then released, Hegarty said.
School officials were trying to determine Tuesday who set off the smoke bomb, Hegarty said. Tuesday's incident comes two weeks after a female student sprayed pepper spray in a crowded hallway at McLane, also causing a temporary evacuation and sending students to the hospital.
"We've had some excitement lately," Hegarty said. "It's getting towards the end of the school year."
