Pasco teacher gets 5-day suspension over FCAT missteps

LAND O'LAKES – An Irvin Education Center teacher on Tuesday accepted a five-day unpaid suspension over missteps when proctoring students taking the FCAT exam in the spring.

Migdalia Mojica initially faced a 10-day suspension after she used email to contact her principal about two misbehaving students, and recorded her efforts to oversee the testing. State law prohibits the use of electronics in the testing room.

After Mojica protested the punishment, superintendent Heather Fiorentino offered to reduce the penalty, but Mojica continued to seek an appeal before the School Board. On Tuesday, the teacher reached a deal to drop her appeal in exchange for Fiorentino modifying her formal letter of reprimand.

The School Board canceled its hearing after Mojica said she agreed to the negotiated settlement.
