Tampa's Brooks-DeBartolo charter school avoids closure

Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School has improved its test scores enough to stay open this fall, district officials said Tuesday. The high-profile charter school had been threatened with closure in May after it earned a D grade from the state in 2008. That prompted former Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Derrick Brooks, the school's president, to make a plea to the Hillsborough County School Board. Official school grades won't be issued until November. But the district has analyzed the school's most recent test scores and concluded it "made enough gains" to avoid district action this year, spokeswoman Linda Cobbe said.
