Got thoughts on oil spill? Obama official visits St. Pete tonight

ST. PETERSBURG — An Obama administration official is holding a hearing at 6 p.m. Tuesday to listen to Tampa Bay's thoughts about the oil spill.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, who is in charge of a presidential commission drawing up a plan for the long-term recovery of the Gulf of Mexico, will speak at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute auditorium at 100 Eighth Ave SE. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Part of Mabus' mission involves economic development, restoration of the ecosystem and environment, assistance to individuals and businesses, and public health efforts in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon disaster.

Mabus is holding hearings throughout the gulf states on what he should do.

    BRANDON — The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office praised a heroic Hooters Restaurant manager Wednesday for coming to the aid of two deputies struggling to subdue an unruly customer.

    It took two deputies and a Hooter's manager to get control of Ashton B. Toney after he threatened to kill an employee who refused to serve him alcohol at a Hooter's in Brandon, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office reported.
