Coast Guard allows boaters to move vessels out of RNC security zone

TAMPA — The U.S. Coast Guard is allowing those who have boats moored in the security zone around the Republican National Convention to move them because of Tropical Storm Isaac.

Owners of boats moored in security areas near the Tampa Bay Times Forum and Tampa Convention Center in downtown Tampa may move the vessels to safety because of the storm. But if they move them out of the security area, they will not be allowed to return until after the zones expire at noon Aug. 31, according to a statement Saturday from the Coast Guard.

"As part of our heavy weather planning, we want boaters to make early preparations for the storm," said Capt. Sheryl Dickinson, captain of the port and commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg. "This temporary allowance ensures boaters can make the safest choices, but we encourage factoring in security zone restrictions to heavy weather planning."
