Water supply unaffected by sinkhole at east Hillsborough landfill

LITHIA — The first round of tests done on private wells and the Floridan Aquifer revealed that a sinkhole that opened in the Southeast County Landfill in December has not contaminated the water.

Tests done on Dec. 22 show no signs that waste — 50 percent of which was ash — seeped into the ground water, the Hillsborough County Public Utilities Department said Friday.

The sinkhole opened up on Dec. 15 and grew to 110 feet wide and 60 feet deep, where it has remained.

County officials submitted a detailed plan to the Florida Department of Environmental protection outlining how they plan to fill the hole and monitor drinking water in the coming months.
