First Sundial store opening May 9

ST. PETERSBURG — Sundial's first store is opening May 9. Diamonds Direct Fine Jewelers will usher in a new era of downtown retail in the former BayWalk at 153 Second Ave. N.

"That's the plan. I believe we are going to be the first one," said Diamonds Direct owner Gary Sanchez.

Since the store is at the back, right side of the lower level of Sundial, its elaborate courtyard should also be open to the public on May 9. Representatives of the retail center's owner, The Edwards Group, would not confirm opening dates.

The store's display windows will include 18-foot-high saltwater fish tanks with submerged jewelry.

The 30-year-old business, which is leaving its location at 5085 34th St. S, is creating a special "sunshine cut" diamond with 97 facets in honor of the Sunshine city and Sundial. It will also offer a commemorative St. Petersburg coin and a charm shaped like the sundial in the center of the shopping plaza.
