Florida employers are laying off the layoffs. Job cuts across Florida are down 37 percent since last April. A report released Thursday by Challenger, Gray & Christmas, an outplacement consultant firm, noted the drop from 1,870 in 2016 to 1,184 last month.

Nationally, layoffs are down 43 percent for the same period, and seem contained to a few industries.

"Although restructuring in the retail sector continues to shed jobs, we aren't seeing the wide scale layoffs in other sectors, like energy or tech," John Challenger, CEO of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, said.

Florida layoffs were concentrated in industries including construction, financial, aerospace and pharmaceutical services, Challenger told the Sun Sentinel.
