Floridian from Madeira Beach chosen as Rhodes Scholar

Two Floridians, one from Madeira Beach and another from St. Augustine, were chosen as Rhodes Scholars and will pursue post-graduate studies at Oxford University.

Christian Nattiel, who is from Madeira Beach. and Lucinda M. Ford were among the 2017 recipients announced early Sunday. They were chosen from 882 applicants who were endorsed by 311 colleges and universities.

Nattiel is a senior at the U.S. Military Academy, where he is double-majoring in mathematical sciences and philosophy. He attended Boca Ciega High School. In a 2013 interview, Nattiel said he aspired to be a politician.

Ford, from St. Augustine, is in her final year at the U.S. Naval Academy, where she is majoring in ocean engineering. Upon graduation, she will take up a commission as a submarine officer.
