City breaks ground on new fire station
City officials broke ground Wednesday on a $2.5 million replacement for Fire Station No. 19 in Port Tampa.
The new station at 7910 Interbay Blvd. replaces a station on W Ingraham Street built in 1961, the year the city annexed Port Tampa.
The 8,660-square-foot station will cover the Port Tampa, Gandy-Sun Bay South and Interbay areas, as well as Tampa's coastline with fireboat No. 19.
The city is using proceeds from the Community Investment Tax — a half-cent sales tax that Hillsborough County voters approved in 1996 to pay for roads, schools and other projects — to pay for the station, which is expected to be done by June.
