EAST TAMPA — Schools shut down this week and kids have almost three months to idle away. Yet, with the completion of two recreation projects in East Tampa, parents will soon have more places to entertain their kids — and themselves.
The 10,000-square-foot Cyrus Greene Park on E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, which opened in 2006, inaugurates its renovated pool on Tuesday.
The $1.5-million pool was funded through community investment tax bonds, is now handicap accessible and features six swim lanes, three floor sprays, two rain arches and a tube slide.
"It provides recreational opportunities for a lot of the children in the community," said Marc Hamburg, president of East Tampa Business and Civic Association.
"It gives the athletic activities for kids, which is important, and it provides a safe and pleasant environment for them to have."
Pool hours will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
Also, about 4,000 square feet were added at Woodland Terrace Park on N 32nd Street.
The recreational park, which first opened in 2002 as an activity center, is now big enough to be classified as a community center, said Linda Carlo, marketing and communications team leader of the Tampa Parks and Recreation Department.
It will be inaugurated June 23 and features a computer club room, a game room, a weight room, and a covered patio play area in addition to cricket, soccer, softball and flag football fields.
The $684,000 auxiliary was funded through bonds also.
"Recreation is very important to communities and this just expands the options that are available to people in East Tampa," said Carlo.
Mayor Pam Iorio will be present at both opening ceremonies.
