Harry Potter-themed Braille Challenge shows kids magic of braille

SKIP O'ROURKE | Times

Sporting Harry Potter glasses, Jacque Williams, 7, uses a Braille machine to type. Jacque and about 50 other children and teens took part in the West and Central Florida Regional Braille Challenge, which had a Harry Potter theme. The Braille Challenge is a national program of the Braille Institute hosted by regional schools and agencies that serve blind and visually impaired children. It is the only national Braille literacy competition of its kind in the country, and is designed to challenge and reward blind students for their study of Braille. The Florida Instructional Materials Center for the Visually Impaired, the Lions Eye Institute Foundation, and Tampa Lighthouse for the Blind are the sponsors of this regional competition. The leading scorers from the event held Friday will move on to the National Braille Challenge.
