Tampa General Hospital was ranked as Florida’s second-best hospital in the U.S. News and World Report’s 2018 Hospital Rankings released Tuesday, while Moffitt Cancer Center was named the country’s eighth-best cancer hospital.

The rankings, which analyze more than 5,000 medical centers and survey responses from more than 30,000 physicians, also recognized Clearwater’s Morton Plant Hospital (eighth-best hospital in the state) and Tampa’s St. Joseph’s Hospital (No. 13).

Moffitt’s national ranking was the highest of any hospital in the Southeast.

TGH, second to Mayo Clinic Jacksonville in the state, also ranked nationally in six specialties, including nephrology (18), diabetes and endocrinology (24), gastroenterology and GI surgery (25), urology (28), orthopedics (39) and pulmonology (46).

It ranked in the top two for seven of the 16 specialties ranked by U.S. News statewide, and was first in nephrology, orthopedics and urology.

The hospital also ranked as best in the state in treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and is the second-best for conducting colon and lung cancer surgeries, hip and knee replacements, and treating patients who suffer heart failure, according to U.S. News.

Morton Plant Hospital gained top-five procedure recognition as well, ranking fourth in Florida in performing aortic valve surgeries, and fifth in both heart bypass and lung cancer surgeries.

Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minn., was named the nation’s best hospital, followed by the Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Baltimore. They finished in the same order last year.

No hospital in the Southeast — or children’s hospital in the state — placed in the top 20 overall.

The only Florida hospital to place in the top five in one of the 16 specialty rankings nationally was Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami, which was ranked the country’s best hospital for ophthalmology.

Correction: Several Florida children’s hospitals were recognized in various areas of the rankings, but none among the top 15. An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that none were recognized.
