BayCare health system to acquire Bartow hospital

BayCare Health System has signed an agreement to acquire Bartow Regional Medical Center, BayCare officials announced Friday.

The 72-bed hospital is currently owned by the for-profit hospital chain Community Health Systems, Inc.

The acquisition is part of a larger strategy to address community health needs in Polk County, BayCare Hospital Division President Glenn Waters said. The not-for-profit health system already owns Winter Haven Hospital.

"A second BayCare hospital in Polk County will help to anchor other health services needed by this large and growing county, while forming the broader geographic footprint needed for future health care models like population health," Waters said.

He would not disclose the price of the acquisition.

BayCare is expected to close on the deal Jan. 1.

The Clearwater-based BayCare Health System owns 13 hospitals in Florida, including Morton Plant in Clearwater, Morton Plant North Bay in New Port Richey, Mease Countryside in Safety Harbor, Mease Dunedin, BayCare Alliant in Dunedin, St. Anthony's in St. Petersburg, St. Joseph's in Tampa, St. Joseph's North in Lutz, St. Joseph's South in Riverview, and South Florida Baptist in Plant City.
