A Healthy Living Expo is set from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today at the office of Dr. Ilka Nazario, Helen Ellis Primary Care Center, 214 Seven Springs Blvd., New Port Richey The event will provide screenings and information to encourage a no-gimmick approach to achieve a healthy and active life, and how to shed excess weight in the process. Life Line Screening is scheduled for 9 a.m. today at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 14236 County Line Road, Hudson, and at the Villas at Hunters Ridge, 5223 Hunters Ridge Drive, New Port Richey at 9 a.m. Friday. November is National Hospice Month and Hernando-Pasco Hospice's south Pasco team serving Holiday, Trinity, Odessa and parts of New Port Richey will host its last training session for 2008. The CARES Bill Payer Program is a program that offers free assistance to seniors who need help writing their checks, paying monthly bills, balancing checkbooks or setting up a budget. These services are available to adults 60 years of age and older who need help managing financial obligation because of visual or physical limitations or a mild memory loss and have a low to moderate income. Volunteers are needed to help with this program, and are screened and trained in all aspects of the program. Call (727) 862-9291, ext. 224.

CARES offers a Senior Moments early memory-loss program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Thursday at the CARES Phil Mishkin Center, 7505 Rottingham Road, Port Richey. Mental stimulation, good nutrition and exercise can help individuals retain the brain's cognitive skills and this program is a proactive approach that provides social support and memory retraining skills. Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders, or SHINE, a program of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, will be at the CARES Elfers Center, 4136 Barker Drive, Elfers, from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 15. Counselors will provide guidance on Medicare, health insurance, prescriptions and long-term care. Bring medications list and questions, and individual advice will be available. The Center for Independence announces a new transportation initiative for disabled adults. Funded by the DOT New Freedom program, the center offers wheelchair-accessible vans linking east and west Pasco bus lines. The center also offers on-demand transportation for evenings and on weekend, especially geared toward employment. Disabled adults must register with the center and receive a picture ID. Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services of Florida Inc. has added new telephones, TTYS and captioned telephones through its no-charge equipment-distribution program. Amplified telephones and related equipment are offered at no cost to permanent Florida residents who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf/blind or speech-impaired.
