Hernando's Cruisin' Cafe fills nutrition gap for kids in summer

DEMETRIUS FREEMAN | Times

Calvin Brown of the Hernando County Parks and Recreation Center helps organize parents and kids into a line outside of the Cruisin' Cafe at Delta Woods Park on Tuesday. "This program is wonderful. By doing this, you provide a healthy meal to these kids, which greatly benefits the community as a whole," he said. The Cruisin' Cafe was started in the summer of 2012 by the Hernando County school district with a goal of reaching children who may not have access to healthy food in the summer. The Cruisin' Cafe operates Monday through Friday until Aug. 8. The cafe travels to two locations, is free to anyone 18 and younger and is funded largely by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
