St. Joseph's Children's Hospital unveils expanded trauma center

An event Friday celebrated the opening of the new and expanded Steinbrenner Emergency/Trauma Center at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital in Tampa.

The hospital has the busiest children's emergency room in the Tampa Bay area, treating more than 45,000 children a year. The new pediatric wing's design features lights, colors and interactive games "to stimulate children's minds and keep them distracted from their illness," said Gilbert Leon, operations manager. The event featured pet therapy animals, tours and children from the hospital's day care center singing holiday songs.

The facility will open to patients on Dec. 16.
