Swimming banned at Ben T. Davis and Bahia Beach in Hillsborough County after tests reveal harmful bacteria

TAMPA — A health advisory for Ben T. Davis and Bahia Beach in Hillsborough County went into effect Thursday after tests of the water revealed harmful bacteria.

Water samples taken from the beaches on Aug. 3 and Aug. 5 showed traces of Enterococci and Fecal Coliform, according to the county health department.

According to the advisory:

"The water samples are being analyzed for enteric bacteria (both fecal coliform and enterococci) that normally inhabit the intestinal tract of humans and animals, which may cause human disease, infections, or rashes. The presence of enteric bacteria is an indication of fecal pollution, which may come from storm water runoff, pets and wildlife, and human sewage."

The advisory will be lifted after tests show the water is safe for swimming.
