Tampa Bay Lightning blanked 4-0 by Ottawa Senators

TAMPA — The Lightning is discovering the difference between simply working hard and finding that extra gear that enables you to succeed in a playoff atmosphere.

Committee tells Tampa City Hall how to shake its reputation as tough place to do business

TAMPA — After seven months of study, a committee of city officials and business people with a stake in development delivered a blueprint for change Tuesday at Tampa City Hall.

The Economic Competitiveness Committee, which Mayor Bob Buckhorn appointed, was made up of 17 lawyers, engineers, developers and builders, plus a City Council member and a neighborhood representative. It began meeting in early July and recommended changes with an eye on repairing the city's damaged reputation in the business community.

Bayshore Boulevard homeowner softens stance, clears path for pedestrians

TAMPA — Bayshore Boulevard property owner Harry E. Teasley Jr. made a peace offering this week to pedestrians who curse his leaf-choked right of way.

A sidewalk? Dream on.

But his ilex shrubs got buzz cuts, and the wanderlust torulosa junipers met pruning shears. Tuesday afternoon, his grounds crew was busy clearing a 4-foot-wide path along the front curb of the retired Coca-Cola executive's residence.

Republican National Convention funds to buy two tactical Tampa Fire Rescue vehicles

TAMPA — City officials are preparing to spend another $464,000 in federal funds on security gear for the Republican National Convention. This time, Tampa Fire Rescue is the beneficiary.

City Council members will be asked Thursday to buy two specialized vehicles from Pierce Manufacturing: a tactical support vehicle for $296,496 and a truck for Tampa Fire Rescue's SWAT medic team for $167,740.

Court records: Man accused of trying to set wife ablaze in Carrollwood had ether in the car

Deputies found ether after attack

A Wesley Chapel man accused of trying to set his wife ablaze, but badly burning himself instead, dropped a steak knife and an ax handle as he chased her outside her apartment earlier this month, records released Tuesday show.

After Hillsborough County deputies responded to the Feb. 6 incident at the Countrywood Apartments in Carrollwood, they said they found a gas canister and duct tape in the car that the man, Matthew Wong, 50, was driving. A search warrant affidavit filed Tuesday shows they also found a bottle of ether.

Florida National Guard to help with Republican National Convention security

TAMPA — On the ground and in the air, up to 1,700 troops from the Florida National Guard could play key support roles during the Republican National Convention.

It's rarely mentioned publicly, but officials have said the Guard troops — many if not most of whom will likely come from a brigade based in Pinellas Park — will be ready to help with duties ranging from communications to flying helicopters to helping police with security and, if necessary, civil disturbances.

Hillsborough looking for ways to simplify its development rules

TAMPA — Hillsborough County will borrow a page from Tampa.

County commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to create a task force to look for ways to streamline the county's zoning and permitting rules. Two commissioners also will sit on the committee.

Eckerd's Lorita Shirley will lead takeover of child protection work in Hillsborough

TAMPA — Hillsborough County's new child protector introduced herself to Tampa today, pledging to review all active child dependency cases to ensure none have slipped through the cracks.

Lorita Shirley is the executive director of Eckerd Youth Alternatives, the lead child protection agency in Pinellas County. Her agency replaces Hillsborough Kids Inc. on July 1. She appeared today at a news conference with David Wilkins, secretary of the state Department of Children and Families.

Lowry Park Zoo welcomes two baby penguins

TAMPA — Two love birds at the Lowry Park Zoo have hatched a pair of chicks that were unveiled just in time for Valentine's Day.

The baby African penguins hatched on Jan. 31 and Feb. 3, and became the first pair to be born to the same parents during a single breeding cycle at the zoo. It's too early to tell if the chicks are male or female, zoo officials said.
