SOUTH TAMPA — After losing his mother nine years ago to cancer and feeling helpless, Russell Huston knew he was destined to help people.
With his background as a massage therapist since 2006 and working in chemotherapy for the last five years with Florida Cancer Specialists and Research Institute, he decided it was time to open his own holistic wellness center and one in South Tampa which is close to some of Tampa’s best hospitals.
His goal with his clinic, Haven Massage & Wellness, is to provide a place of refuge for anyone under stress or in pain, and strives to differentiate himself by doing what others may be reluctant to do - work on cancer patients. According to Hutson, there’s a myth that massages can be detrimental to cancer patients and the thought is that a massage can spread it and cause more damage.
However, he fearlessly embraces it.
“I talk to them not as a medical person, but as person,” Hutson said. “The big thing is the stress of the chemo itself and all the difficult things they go through, and massage therapy improves their immune system and helps their stress levels.”
At Haven, Hutson offers lymphatic drainage, oncology massage, scar release, and reiki as the core services of his practice.
In addition, he offers therapeutic massage, pregnancy massage, and Thai massage.
Prices for services cost $1 a minute for cancer patients or $60 for an hour, and $70 for non-cancer patients. This month in support of breast cancer awareness, Haven offers half off specials for cancer patients and package deals ranging from $195-$300 for three or five sessions.
Haven Massage & Wellness recently celebrated its grand opening Thursday (Oct. 11) and operates from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday at 3825 Henderson Blvd. For more information call (813) 544-2952 or visit tampabay-massage.com/schedule.
