Amy Scherzer's Diary: the debs of Ye Mystic Krewe, Krewe of Venus

Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla Debutante Ball

The 25 young women joining the ranks of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla debutantes presented since 1947 brought beauty and ambition to the formal rite of passage. Gabby Gostigian, 20, studies zoology and microbiology at the University of Florida. Katie O'Drobinak, 19, will be a Chinese-speaking business major when she graduates from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Look for the work of Shannon Albrink, 20, Tisch School of the Arts student at New York University, at a future film festival. Elly Straske, 19, is already acting and stage-managing at Georgetown.

Capt. James Von Thron, M.D., and emcee-pirate Stephen Fluharty read those impressive career goals and many more as the debs, glowing in long white gowns and clutching deep red roses in white-gloved arms, curtseyed to 100th Gasparilla king Philip Carroll and queen Colleen Pizzo. The Ward Cook Orchestra kept the beat for 600 members and guests Nov. 27 at the Marriott Waterside. Teary mothers, proud fathers and eager escorts continued to celebrate at the after-party.

Krewe of Venus Debutante Grand Ball

King Venus the 48th Daniel Perry and his daughters, queens Adrienne and Amanda, welcomed six debutantes, all students or graduates of Hernando High School, into club society, an annual Thanksgiving tradition.

Navy and Air Force ROTC cadets from the University of South Florida added military precision as each debutante bowed to the royal court beneath crossed swords, The Hon. Samantha Ward read the women's extensive achievements and goals before the father-daughter waltz.

The best part of making her debut, said University of Tampa freshman Ali Rey, is "networking, making great connections and being with my Brooksville friends." Krewe of Venus president Brandt Cosgrove hosted 100 guests at the formal affair Nov. 29 at the Carrollwood Country Club.
